  • Extension with KNVB runs for two seasons
  • Men’s Eredivisie and ING have been partners since 2000
  • National governing body hopes that “more sheep will follow”

Netherlands-based financial services company ING has expanded its sponsorship agreement with the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) to include the top-flight Women’s Eredivisie.

The extended deal with the national soccer governing body will run for the next two seasons, prolonging ING’s partnership with the KNVB and the men’s Eredivisie, which dates back to 2000.

By becoming the first sponsor of the domestic women’s top flight, ING will look to help further professionalise the competition. The company and the KNVB have previously worked together to grow the women’s game, including a commitment made in early 2020 to increase female membership at the KNVB by 25 per cent.

Earlier this month, ING also renewed sponsorship contracts with more than 500 amateur Dutch soccer clubs. A further stipulation for clubs where ING is the main partner is to allocate 25 per cent of the sponsorship deal to women’s and girls’ soccer.

The Dutch women’s national team are currently European champions, having won the 2017 Uefa Women’s Championship, which was also staged in the Netherlands.

“It is a given that more sheep will follow when one crosses the dam and I hope this is also the case here,” said Kirsten van de Ven, manager of women’s football at the KNVB.

“It’s fantastic that ING dares to stick out its neck and help put the Women’s Eredivisie on the map even more in the coming years.”

The league kicks off its 2020/21 season on 6th September and has been rebranded as Eredivisie Vrouwen.
