Agency giant Wasserman has announced the creation of a new dedicated boxing division after acquiring Team Sauerland, one of the sport’s leading promoters.

Wasserman Boxing will oversee all boxing-focused activities for the Los Angeles-headquartered company, including athlete marketing and bout promotions.

Wasserman currently represents more than 2,000 clients across 42 sports, including the likes of Megan Rapinoe, Marshawn Lynch, Jamie Vardy, Russell Westbrook and Rickie Fowler. Its existing boxing client base includes former super middleweight world champion George Groves and London 2012 bronze medalist Anthony Ogogo.

Founded in 1978, Team Sauerland is led by brothers Kalle and Nisse Sauerland. It has promoted more than 50 world champions across multiple weight classes, including current fighters such as Mairis Briedis, Filip Hrgovic and Chris Eubank Jr.

Financial terms of the takeover have not been disclosed, but Boxing News reports that the deal is worth a 'multimillion pound' sum.

“We are delighted to welcome Kalle, Nisse and their team to Wasserman,” said Casey Wasserman, the agency’s chairman and chief executive. “Their expertise and history within the sport is unrivalled and we are incredibly excited about the formation of Wasserman Boxing.

“We believe that together we can make a positive contribution to the boxing industry with plans to deliver world class promotions and shows to fans around the world.”

In an interview with Boxing News, Kalle Sauerland (pictured) described the acquisition as “a massive deal”, with the new entity set to be “the most well-funded outfit” in a sport dominated by major promoters such as Matchroom Boxing, MTK Global, Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank.

“We believe Wasserman is the ideal company to not only develop what we’ve achieved at Sauerland but take it to the next level,” Sauerland said in a statement. “My brother Nisse and I have been big admirers of what they do, quite simply, they’re the best.”

He added: “The thought of having the power of Wasserman and our boxing expertise should excite the fighters, the TV companies and most importantly, the fans, in what is going to be an adventurous future for the sport. We are going to take this to a whole new level.”
