Sports streaming platform DAZN saw more than 20 million viewers watch its free-to-air (FTA) coverage of this season’s Uefa Women’s Champions League (UWCL) group stages.
Confirmed:
- 2022/23 group stages saw a 42 per cent year-over-year (YoY) increase on the 14 million viewers who watched the same stage last season
- ‘Millions’ streamed the soccer competition’s group stages through DAZN’s main subscription platform
Context:
DAZN has been the UWCL’s global broadcaster, excluding China and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, since 2021. Its agreement also includes a distribution deal with YouTube for live games to be available FTA for the first two seasons of its contract, with the last two campaigns having 19 matches on the Google-owned platform, down from the current 61 games.
Comment:
“As we move into the knockout stages of this elite competition and continue the second year of DAZN’s broadcasting partnership, the audience growth has been impressive, and the figures speak for themselves,” said Andrea Ekblad, vice president of women’s sports at DAZN.
“We want to continue to drive as many global audiences as possible and are on a mission to be the home of women’s football.”
Coming next:
DAZN will want the increased viewership numbers to continue into this season’s UWCL final, with last season’s fixture posting a record-setting live cumulative viewership of 3.6 million globally.
