American bicycle manufacturer Trek has become the official bicycle sponsor of the Tour of Spain, the Vuelta a España, one of cycling’s three ‘Grand Tours’, after agreeing a deal with the Tour’s organisers Unipublic.
As part of the sponsorship agreement, the inaugural Trek Challenge, a four-event competition open to the public, will be held at Madrid’s Jarama Racetrack on 10th and 11th September during the Tour.
The four events include a team and individual time trial, mountain bike race, and distance-covered event. All events are open to the public and each will feature different age groups and ability categories. Winners of each event will be awarded various prizes with the winner of the individual time trial receiving a Trek Madone.
Although financial details have not been released, the deal is likely to be worth a low-six figure sum.
Trek vice president of marketing and product development Joe Vadeboncoeur said: “With Team RadioShack and Leopard-Trek competing this year, becoming the official bicycle of the Vuelta takes our involvement another step further and is a sign of our company’s commitment to world class racing and events.”
He added: “The Trek Challenge is going to be an amazing addition to this year’s race and will offer everyone who attends or competes an unforgettable experience.”
This year’s three-week event covers 3,295 kilometres (2,045 miles) and comprises 21 stages, beginning with a night time-trial on 20th August in Benidorm and finishing in Madrid on 11th September.
