National Football League (NFL) legend Tom Brady has agreed a deal to acquire a minority stake in the Las Vegas Raiders, owner Mark Davis has confirmed.

Confirmed:

  • Davis confirmed to ESPN that he had reached an agreement with the retired quarterback to buy a stake
  • Brady becomes the third NFL player in history to become an owner, following George Halas and Jerry Richardson
  • At least 24 current NFL team owners have to approve Brady’s Raiders deal

Context:

Brady and Davis are already in business with each other, with the former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback having earlier this year secured a minority stake in the Las Vegas Aces, the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) franchise that the Raiders owner acquired in 2021. Brady, who insists his latest retirement is permanent after originally calling it a day in 2022, is also set to join Fox as a broadcaster after signing a US$375 million deal with the US network last year.

Comment:

“We’re excited for Tom to join the Raiders,” Davis told ESPN. “It’s exciting because he will be just the third player in the history of the National Football League to become an owner.”

Coming next:

Brady’s purchase will need to be approved by the NFL owners, although it is thought that will not come at the current round of meetings taking place in Minneapolis.
