New York Mets owner Steve Cohen is the latest to buy a team in TMRW Sports’ tech-focused TGL golf venture,
Confirmed:
- New York-based team to be managed by Cohen’s family office Cohen Private Ventures
- Cohen Private Ventures co-founder Andrew B. Cohen also joins as a minority investor
- Cohen joins Arthur Blank, the Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian and the Williams’ sisters as TGL team owners
Context:
TGL is a golf league that will use technological innovation and a shorter format to appeal to a large audience.
The likes of Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas have committed to competing in the league, as well as Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, who jointly launched TMRW Sports alongside former NBC Sports executive Mike McCarley.
Comment:
“It’s an innovative concept that combines technology, data and a competitive team format in primetime on Mondays,” Andrew B. Cohen told Sportico.
“Given the way golf is played now, both in simulators and on the course, I think it’s going to combine all those elements.”
Coming next:
The league is expected to announce the owners of two more franchises before play commences in January 2024.
