Disney-owned Indian media company Star has launched a new premium over-the-top (OTT) service, Hotstar VIP.
Hotstar VIP will offer subscribers access to the Indian Premier League (IPL), the ICC Cricket World Cup and English soccer’s Premier League for RS365 (US$5.32) annually.
In a unique model suited to the Indian market and borrowed from the e-commerce sector, subscribers can elect to pay their fees in cash, allowing users without access to digital payment options to use the OTT service.
Login can also be done via mobile phone numbers in another step towards making the service more accessible.
Additionally, existing subscribers to Hotstar’s All Annual Sports plan will be automatically upgraded to Hotstar VIP at no additional costs.
“Hotstar VIP is aimed at providing users accessibility – be it with the introductory price or the ability to watch shows in multiple regional languages,” said Varun Narang, chief product officer at Hotstar “It is a value proposition built with the Indian audience at the heart of it.”
Alongside offering premium sports content, Hotstar VIP will also air exclusive TV serials before they are shown on television and Hotstar Specials – a series of authentic Indian-led stories from the world of sport.
Hotstar’s existing platform was launched in 2015 and now has over 350 million downloads with over 150 million monthly active users.
