SA Rugby, the governing body for rugby union in South Africa, has announced two new sponsorship deals.
Multinational telecommunications company MTN will replace Vodacom as the headline sponsor of the Springboks, while it was also revealed that Southern Palace Group of Companies has signed on as an associate sponsor of the national rugby union team.
MTN has agreed a three-year deal with SA Rugby, and the company’s logo will continue to adorn the front of the team’s playing jerseys having debuted during their 37-14 win over France on Saturday.
“We’re delighted to welcome MTN as our new headline Springbok sponsor,” said Jurie Roux, chief executive of SA Rugby. “They proudly carry millions of calls across the continent every day and we’re proud to carry their name on our jerseys. From the very first conversation we had with them they saw the power and potential of a partnership with the Springboks and SA Rugby way beyond placing a logo on a sportsman’s playing kit.
“They understand where we are as a sport and they want to partner with us in that journey of inspiring the nation. It has been a tough couple of years from a financial perspective for SA Rugby – and our challenges certainly remain – but this partnership marks the crossing of a watershed for SA Rugby.”
Enzo Scarcella, chief operating officer at MTN SA, added: “As a proudly South African brand, we found it fitting to back the pride of the nation – the Springboks. MTN has been a long-time supporter of South African sport and this new sponsorship further entrenches our position as the ardent supporter of South Africa’s sporting ambitions.”
Meanwhile, under the terms of the agreement with Southern Palace Group, the industrial holding company’s logo will be imprinted on the left panel of the Springboks’ matchday and training shorts.
Speaking about the deal, Roux said: “We are delighted that SPG has joined the national team as an associate sponsor as the Springboks stand at the beginning of a new journey under the captaincy of Warren Whiteley.
“It is always exciting when a local, proudly South African company joins our proud family of sponsors. SA Rugby and the Springboks are looking forward to a successful partnership with the SPG group.”
Lucas Tseki, group chief executive for Southern Palace Group of Companies, added: “We are delighted to partner with SA Rugby, as our partnership will offer the Group a platform to collaborate with a well-established brand to nurture the company’s young, innovative and dynamic brand into the South African and global stage; and through our products and services we can offer SA Rugby a transformative edge off the field.”
The Springboks play the second match of their three-Test series against France in Durban, South Africa this Saturday.
