Sports digital solutions company Sportradar has launched the first over-the-top (OTT) service dedicated to second-tier Australian soccer.

Working in partnership with the sport’s regional federations in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland, the NPL TV streaming service will focus on live and on-demand content for each state’s National Premier League matches. In addition to NSW and Queensland, Sportradar hopes to attract the country’s other regional bodies over the course of the 2020 season.

More than 1,000 matches will be livestreamed exclusively on the jointly owned platform, with Sportradar also exploring the integration of ad-supported and paid subscription models on a revenue share basis.

Under the existing model, NPL TV is available for free to domestic subscribers, who also have the option to upgrade to a premium full-HD monthly service. A separate paywall has been created for international subscribers. The service is available online and via a mobile app for iOS and Android.

David Edwards, Sportradar’s director of sports media and partnerships in Oceania, said: “We’re seeing an increasing demand from both state-based and national sporting federations in establishing direct-to-consumer streaming platforms. Niche competitions suit the OTT distribution model by allowing rights holders to take control of their assets and develop a direct relationship with their fans on their own terms.

“We look forward to helping National Premier Leagues competitions increase digital revenues and supercharge their fan engagement through our unique, data-driven approach to OTT.”

Up until now, National Premier Leagues matches have only been available to watch via social media. By launching a dedicated OTT service, consumer data gathered by Sportradar will be shared with rights holders to help them to tailor content distribution based on each user’s behaviour.

The platform will also include full match replays along with a range of on-demand content customised to each user and supplied by each member federation.

Brian Meinrath, Football NSW’s head of commercial, said: “Our partnership with Football Queensland and Sportradar is a defining moment for the National Premier Leagues. NPL TV provides us with the means to really understand who our audience is and provide robust viewership numbers to the market.

“By aggregating content on the one platform, it gives us a huge opportunity to present existing fans with superior live and on-demand content as well as showcase our leagues to a new and expanding audience.”

Tracy Grierson, Football Queensland’s general manager for marketing, media and partnerships, added: “Football Queensland is an innovative organisation and by introducing the Sportradar built OTT platform, we will be making football and our competitions more accessible to supporters in Australia and around the world.

“Our partnership with Football NSW is an example of the unity of our federations and clearly demonstrates our desire to address future opportunities together for the promotion of our sport.”
