- Audience was FS1’s third highest ever for USWNT match outside of Women’s World Cup
- US women’s soccer interest growing as NWSL sees 500% YoY growth for 2020 season
The US women’s national soccer team’s (USWNT) victory over Canada in the SheBelieves Cup clocked 498,000 viewers on Fox Sports 1, a tournament record on the pay-TV channel.
The US viewing figures for the match, which was played on 19th February, are also up 78 per cent from the 2019 SheBelieves Cup average. US broadcasting giant Fox Sports added that the game was the third most-watched USWNT match ever on FS1, excluding Fifa Women’s World Cup fixtures.
The US women defeated Canada 1-0, courtesy of a Rose Lavelle goal, and are now two wins from two in the round-robin tournament. They next face Argentina on 25th February at Exploria Stadium in Orlando.
The figures highlight the continued and growing interest in women’s soccer in the US. Last October, the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), the top tier of US women’s club soccer, confirmed record-breaking domestic television audiences for its 2020 campaign. This included the league’s domestic TV audiences jumping nearly 500 per cent year-over-year.
Viewership peaked during the final of the Challenge Cup bubble tournament in the summer, with a record 653,000 viewers tuning in.
