German soccer side Schalke 04 have prematurely extended their major sponsorship deal with Russian energy giant Gazprom.

The renewed five-year deal will run until the end of the 2021/22 season and, according to the German newspaper Bild, is worth €150 million (USD$170.89 million) in total.

Gazprom’s previous contract with the team was set to expire in 2017, but has been renewed early. The firm will continue as Schalke’s primary front-of-shirt sponsor, and already boasts both Uefa and Fifa as official partners

“This long-term contract shows the economic stability of having Gazprom in our club’s structure,” said Schalke chief marketing officer Alexander Jobst.

Schalke currently sit seventh in the Bundesliga, level on points with both Hertha Berlin and Mainz 05 ahead of them, with just one game left to play. All three teams remain three points off Borussia Monchengladbach who sit in fourth, the last remaining Uefa Champions League qualifying spot.
