In a boost for pirate streaming combatants, a popular Reddit forum where subscribers post links to live pirate streams for soccer matches has been shut down ahead of an ‘impeding ban’, according to its moderator.

The subreddit forum R/soccerstreams, which had 425,000 subscribers, has been forced to cease all user-related activity, after Reddit apparently warned the feed over copyright infringement.

The forum, which plays host to illegal pirate live content links, is in breach of Reddit’s user agreement that states pirated material will be removed and that repeat infringers will be banned.

A statement from the R/soccerstreams’ moderator read: ‘We’ve officially reached critical mass. I regret to inform you all that a few days ago the Reddit Admins got in touch with us about an impeding ban of this subreddit if changes weren’t made.

‘The only way to save it, from our perspective, was to cease all user-related activity here. Due to this, and to save the history behind this subreddit over the years, r/soccerstreams will now serve as a home base for the official Soccer Streams mod team.’

The forum will now be used to post announcements, updates and news, according to the statement.

Moderators have set up new subreddit feeds for fans to continue posting links to soccer competitions as temporary solutions, including Premier League matches.

In July last year, a High Court order granted English soccer’s top flight power to disrupt and block illegal streams of its owned content to protect the Premier League’s UK£8.4 billion (US$10.8 billion) broadcast rights.

A similar order led to 200,000 illegal streams being blocked or disrupted throughout the 2017/18 Premier League season. The Premier League is also seeking legal action over Saudi Arabian pirate channel BeoutQ, which has been illegally streaming games broadcast on the Qatar-based pay-TV serve BeIN Sports
