English soccer’s Premier League has announced that it will open its first international office in Singapore to ramp up the fight against piracy and support its broadcast partners in the Asia-Pacific region.
The top-tier league’s new Asia-Pacific base is located in Tanjong Pagar and begins operation on 14th January.
The move will see the Premier League deploy its enforcement programme across several markets, while it will also help licensees activate their rights and promote the competition.
The opening of the new office marks a continuation of the Premier League’s anti-piracy efforts in Asia, where the organisation has taken action against illegal apps in Singapore and more recently worked with Thai authorities to support raids on suppliers of illicit streaming devices.
“The Asia-Pacific region is strategically important for the Premier League and its clubs,” said Paul Molnar, director of broadcasting at the Premier League, which is also a member of the Coalition Against Piracy in Asia. “Singapore provides an excellent location for our first international office and we look forward to using this base to support our many broadcast partners across the region.
“Equally, it is critical that we now deploy local resource and expertise to combat the increasing threat of piracy which undermines all stakeholders in the creative industry.”
Asia has millions of Premier League fans and has become an increasingly significant market for the organisation in recent years. The league staged sell-out pre-season tournaments in Hong Kong in 2017 and Singapore in 2015, while a number of Asian companies now hold sponsorship deals with English clubs.
The Premier League is the second European soccer league to open an office in the Asia-Pacific region, following in the footsteps of Germany’s Bundesliga, which set up a Singapore branch in 2012.
