- Agreement covers off-peak events, including tennis, soccer, volleyball and esports
- Roughly 50% of sports bets in US made in-play, says PointsBet VP
- Sportsbook signed ‘US$500m’ NBC Sports betting content deal in August
PointsBet has expanded its content partnership with data and digital solutions firm Genius Sports to bring live streams from sporting events to the gambling operator’s digital platforms in the US.
The new agreement will see the sportsbook give users access to live sport via its mobile app and website, adding the option to place in-play wagers using Betgenius software.
PointsBet’s live streams will primarily offer content from events played at off-peak times. According to a report by Sportico, the partnership covers multiple sporting events, including tennis, soccer, volleyball, table tennis, and esports.
Whereas in-game sports betting accounts for up to 80 per cent of all sports wagers in mature markets such as the UK, Ron Shell, PointsBet’s vice president for customer and insights in the US, says that only 50 per cent place bets in-play.
“Wagering will trend more and more toward in-play as the U.S. market matures—a natural shift given the consistent overlap of U.S. sporting events, as well as the structure of U.S. sports allowing for micro markets,” Shell added.
“While this partnership with Betgenius is just the tip of the iceberg for PointsBet in terms of streaming.”
Pointsbet first entered the US market in 2019 and currently has a presence several US states, including in New Jersey, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Colorado. In August, the betting firm also signed a five-year partnership reportedly worth US$500 million with Comcast-owned media group NBC Sports.
That deal was soon followed by a five-year agreement between PointsBet and the University of Colorado, marking the first gambling partnership in US college sports.
