Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise the Oakland A’s have unveiled plans for a new ballpark in a deal that has been described as ‘bigger than baseball’ by the team’s president.
As part of the designs, the team made famous in the early 2000s for its ‘Moneyball’ strategy has revealed a new waterfront stadium at the Howard Terminal site, with the aim of completing the project by 2023.
The expansive development is two-fold, with the MLB outfit seeking to revamp its current Coliseum arena, which is also the current home to National Football League (NFL) team the Oakland Raiders.
However, with the Raiders set to relocate to Las Vegas before 2020, the A’s plan will see the Coliseum redeveloped for the benefit of the local community, while the MLB franchise privately funds its new 34,000-seater waterfront ballpark.
A’s president Dave Kaval said in a statement: ‘We are excited to build a bold, iconic ballpark at Howard Terminal. This design will allow us to blur the boundaries of a traditional ballpark and integrate into the surrounding neighbourhood.’
The ballpark proposal, which has been fronted by Danish architect firm Bjarke Ingels Group, will also feature residential and retail opportunities.
The A's must still complete a state environmental review of the Howard Terminal plan, as well as having to agree terms with the Port of Oakland either to lease or purchase the 55-acre plot.
The overhauled Coliseum site will comprise a low-rise sports complex to replace the current arena, as well as a technology hub.
Kaval added in his statement: ‘We plan to redevelop the Coliseum to help that site realise its full potential for the residents of Oakland for the long term.’
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred backed the plans in a statement, saying: ‘We are excited about the A's plans at Howard Terminal, not just for the club but for their fans, who deserve a first-class venue to support one of the most competitive franchises in Major League Baseball.
‘The organisation has been consistent in their desire to thrive in the city of Oakland and we are glad that those plans are moving forward toward the opening of a new ballpark in 2023.’
