The Portland Thorns’ win over the Kansas City Current in the 2022 National Women’s Soccer League’s (NWSL) championship game generated a record audience of 915,000 viewers, CBS has revealed.

The figure marks a 71 per cent year-over-year (YoY) increase on last year’s final, setting a new record for a NWSL match.

This year’s edition of the NWSL championship fixture was the first to be broadcast in Paramount-owned CBS’ primetime slot on 29th October, as the Thorns defeated the Current 2-0 to claim their third title.

In addition, the game was the most-streamed ever NWSL game in households on the over-the-top (OTT) subscription platform Paramount+, which saw a double-digit audience increase on last year’s championship match.

The 2022 season had already seen the league set a new attendance record when 32,00 fans watched San Diego Wave’s 1-0 win over Angel City in September.
