US merchandise giant Fanatics has reported a 35 per cent spike in year-on-year (YoY) National Football League (NFL) jersey sales following the 2020 season’s opening weekend, chief executive Michael Rubin has confirmed.

According to ESPN, quarterback Tom Brady topped the rankings for the best-selling jersey as his Tampa Bay Buccaneers debut on 13th September saw the Florida-based outfit lose 34-23 away to the New Orleans Saints.

New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton was the second-most purchased jersey, and was only 50 sales shy of his predecessor Brady going into the NFL regular season’s opening night on 10th September.

The NFL’s top five jersey sales also included Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, and San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa.

The spike in jersey sales follows a recent growth period for Fanatics, which reportedly raised a further US$350 million in Series E funding in August, increasing the company’s valuation from US$4.5 billion to US$6.2 billion.

As reported by SportsPro, the company’s increased valuation benefits the NFL and also Major League Baseball (MLB), which collectively invested US$150 million into the firm in 2017.

Adding to its NFL portfolio, Fanatics signed a ten-year partnership with the Patriots in April to operate the franchise’s ecommerce platform. The move came as a welcome boost following the Covid-19 outbreak.

In March, the pandemic also led Fanatics to stop the production of MLB player jerseys at its Pennsylvania factory to focus its efforts on producing medical masks and gowns to support frontline workers.
