Twitter will offer single-player live streams during coverage of 20 Turner Sports National Basketball Association (NBA) matches this season.

As part of the move, the NBA, which has the largest Twitter community of any sports league in the world, will hand control to its 27.5 million followers to vote for the player they most want to see streamed on the social media platform.

The idea is to feature over-the-top (OTT) content that compliments Turner’s NBA coverage, offering its audience a way to view the game from different vantage points in real-time.

“The NBA Twitter community is among the most vibrant in sports and entertainment,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “While watching NBA games on TNT, our fans on Twitter can now enjoy a unique second screen experience that will further enhance the way fans engage with each other and the game.”

The new feature will apply to the second half for each match, which will debut during Turner’s presentation of the 2019 NBA All-Star Game on 17th February.

It follows Turner’s decision last month to allow subscribers to its digital NBA coverage to pay for games quarter by quarter and Tuesday’s announcement of a collaboration with Yahoo on new Twitter show 'The Bounce'.

The schedule of regular-season and playoff livestreams will be announced at a later date, and will include dedicated commentators to provide analysis on the elected player.

Through its NBA Digital partnership, Turner will also continue to provide on-demand content from the NBA Twitter handle, including video of pre-game warmups, in-game and post-game highlights, and behind-the-scenes content.

“Turner and the NBA have always taken a leadership position in providing fans with engaging experiences and this partnership with Twitter is the latest example,” said Turner’s president David Levy.

“This complementary livestream on Twitter – from the distinct vantage point of the fan-voted, most coveted player on a given night – will provide an additive experience for fans.”
