The BBC UK public service broadcaster has acquired a package of select National Basketball Association (NBA) free-to-air (FTA) rights for the 2022/23 season.

Contract:

  • BBC will broadcast the NBA’s international game from Paris on 19th January
  • Deal also includes four additional regular season games, two playoff matches, one from the conference finals and one NBA finals series game
  • NBA games to air on BBC Three and the iPlayer streaming service
  • Package also includes select NBA highlights and an end of season review show

Context:

After switching its European games to Paris from London in 2020, this year’s edition at the Accor Arena has seen the NBA secure 17 marketing partners – the most ever for the league’s international showpiece. Securing FTA exposure provides significant reach for these brands in a game set to be broadcast in more than 200 countries and territories globally.

Coming next:

A recently agreed a partnership with Horizon Sports for analytics on overseas marketing will help the NBA better understand how to commercialise the international series as the league seeks grow its reach across Europe. The NBA also recently opened the door for its franchises to secure more international sponsors, raising its limit on overseas sponsors from three to ten.
