- Marseille first French club to broadcast live games on Twitch
- Streaming service has been showing Premier League and NWSL in recent weeks
Top-flight French soccer club Olympique de Marseille have announced that their two upcoming friendly matches will be broadcast on Amazon-owned streaming platform Twitch.
The games against Austrian third division side FC Pinzgau on 19th July and German fourth-tier outfit SV Heimstetten on 22nd July will both be available to watch on Marseille’s Twitch channel, as well as on the club’s official website.
The move makes Marseille the first French soccer outfit to broadcast matches on Twitch. The Ligue 1 club’s chief marketing and media officer Hervé Philippe said the team plan to be “more and more active” on the platform in the coming months.
He added: “After TikTok, which we joined very early in January 2019, and Snapchat in February 2019, OM plans to connect with a younger and more digitally active audience on social networks. Football and OM have quickly become highly sought and interactive themes on these platforms. So it makes sense to participate with creativity and interactivity.”
“This is the very first time that Twitch will broadcast a live match for a Ligue 1 club,” said Corentin Dubois, Twitch’s partnership manager for France. “We are very proud to support Olympique de Marseille in its preparations for next season. Football fans were able to follow their favourite stars on Twitch during the confinement and can continue to support their clubs on the platform. ”
Twitch has been streaming top-flight English soccer games for the first time after Amazon announced that its coverage of four additional Premier League matches for the 2019/20 season would air on the platform.
The streaming service also has rights to North America’s National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), while its coverage of other sports includes Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL), the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) G League development competition and Thursday night National Football League (NFL) games.
