English soccer giants Liverpool have secured a multi-year partnership with SkillCorner, a Paris-based start-up specialising in artificial intelligence (AI) tracking.

The Premier League outfit will utilise SkillCorner’s live video ball tracking and player movement platform to analyse their matches.

SkillCorner claims its technology is capable of tracking one million data points during live match broadcasts. Following a test phase Liverpool are hoping the AI-accrued data can provide greater insight into player performance during their long-term partnership.

“The way [Liverpool] have used data to their advantage over the past years is revolutionary and being chosen by them for the quality of our data makes us very proud,” said Hugo Bordigoni, SkillCorner chief executive.

SkillCorner’s USP is that it analyses video and does not require a large human workforce to record all the data points of both teams in a match.

Expanding on the deal with French tech digital outlet 01net, Bordigoni said of SkillCorner’s competitors: “These solutions are always limited in scope, a club like Liverpool will never be able to access OM's GPS data, for example.

“SkillCorner is able to have the same type of data that we have with a GPS, but with a non-intrusive solution that is based only on TV videos.”
