Liverpool introduced cashless payments across their Anfield stadium during their weekend Premier League game against Leicester City in the first of a phased rollout designed to offer a speedier service for fans at the venue.

The move by the English soccer giants saw a number of bars, kiosks and food outlets inside Anfield operating a cashless service during the match on 5th October. It followed positive feedback from fans and a successful trial at concerts and major events over the summer.

All major contactless debit and credit cards were accepted, with chip and pin applying for purchases over UK£30 (US$37). Mobile and wearable payments, including Apple Pay and Google Pay, could also be used.

The rollout aims to improve service times during peak periods on matchdays and shorter service periods such as half-time, while offering more payment options and improved security.

Liverpool have already introduced a click and collect facility on all concourses, meaning fans can avoid half-time queues by pre-ordering food and drink for collection using the SeatServe App.

Paul Cuttill, Liverpool ‘s vice president stadium operations, said: “We are trialling this service across the stadium with the hope of reducing queues during peak times. It will also make things more secure for us and will ultimately help us to deliver the best possible customer service to all our fans.

“We appreciate there are those supporters who like to pay in cash, so will continue to offer a provision at a number of kiosks inside the ground. The good news is that a large proportion of our fans are already paying by card rather than with cash in the stadium, so we are hoping that the transition will be quick and easy for many fans.”

Liverpool head into the international break with a perfect league record and are on a run of 17 Premier League victories, bettered only by Manchester City’s sequence of 18. The Reds have a chance to equal that record against rivals Manchester United on 20th October.
