French soccer's Professional Football League (LFP) is set to make attending Ligue 1 games more affordable by introducing a €10 (US$11) price cap on away tickets from next season.
The move, which was proposed by the governing body during a meeting on Wednesday, will also see travelling supporters of second-tier Ligue 2 clubs pay just €5 (US$5.50) for tickets.
The proposal for a single visitor rate in the top two tiers of French soccer will now be submitted to the LFP board on 6th June, with the intention of rolling out the new initiative at the beginning of the 2019/20 campaign.
If approved, the Ligue 1 away ticket price cap would be considerably less than that first implemented ahead of the 2016/17 season by England’s Premier League, which in February agreed to continue to limit the cost of away tickets to UK£30 (US$38) for the next three years.
The Championship, however, is yet to introduce a cap on away ticket prices. Research published in February by the Football Supporters Federation found that some 33 matches in England’s second tier had priced away tickets as high as between UK£35 and UK£40, while the average cost of an away ticket stood at UK£27.04.
Despite that, the English Football League (EFL) apparently has no immediate plans to follow either the Premier League or the LFP in rolling out a price cap on away tickets.
‘Singling individual cases out can often draw inaccurate conclusions,’ an EFL spokesperson told the FSF in a statement. ‘But the live football experience remains an attractive proposition to millions of people young and old; a fact that is testament to the effort clubs make in working with supporters to devise innovative ways to attracting fans into their stadiums.’
