Indian video streaming platform Hotstar recorded 18.6 million concurrent viewers during its live coverage from Sunday’s Indian Premier League’s (IPL) final, smashing its own record set in the previous season.

Star India’s over-the-top (OTT) platform, which Disney acquired as part of its US$71.3 billion takeover of Fox assets earlier this year, set a benchmark 10.3 million simultaneous views 12 months ago.

After surpassing last season’s total viewership within the first three weeks of the 2019 IPL campaign, Hotstar, which acquired domestic IPL rights in 2017, posted its new best in India as fans tuned in to its website and app to watch the Mumbai Indians’ one-run victory against the Chennai Super Kings.

The results also bode well for the platform ahead of this year’s upcoming Cricket World Cup, which Hotstar will also stream to viewers in India.

Hotstar’s previous record saw 12.7 million viewers stream the Royal Challengers Bangalore versus the Mumbai Indians match in March, while the platform also revealed its viewers are staying engaged with its content for twice as long compared to last year.

In time for the 2019 campaign, Hotstar launched a new social tool for its IPL coverage called Koi Yaar Nahi Far, which enables viewers to invite their friends and family watch matches together via the platform.

Varun Narang, Hotstar’s chief product officer, previously said: “The remarkable rate at which the viewership has grown over the years is testament to the audience pull that Vivo IPL enjoys.”
