IPL 2023 final delivers record 32m streaming viewers on JioCinema

Viacom18-owned Indian streaming service claims global record for most concurrent views to a live-streamed event.

JioCinema pulled in 32 million viewers for its broadcast of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) final, claiming a global record for the most concurrent views of a live-streamed event. 

Confirmed:

  • Viacom18-owned JioCinema’s free-to-air (FTA) coverage of rain-delayed final between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans racks up concurrent viewership of 32 million
  • Previous record of 25.3 million had been set by over-the-top (OTT) platform Hotstar during 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final game between India and New Zealand.

Context:

The 2023 IPL campaign was the first in Viacom18’s I₹23,758 crore (US$3 billion) digital rights deal covering the 2023 to 2027 cycle and rounds out an impressive debut campaign for JioCinema, which generated 1.47 billion total video views during the league’s opening weekend and 13 billion video views in the first five weeks.

Disney Star, which holds the IPL’s domestic TV rights, is yet to announce its viewership for the final, but has already confirmed to SportsPro that the 2023 season was the most-watched edition ever on television, with live broadcasts over the first 66 matches reaching 482 million viewers.
