The Golden State Warriors remain the most popular National Basketball Association (NBA) team online in China, according to a report from Mailman.
The San Francisco-based franchise came out on top as the Chinese sports digital agency revealed its NBA Red Card 2019 report. The study analyses the online influence and digital performance of the NBA in China, finding that that league’s teams had accrued a cumulative 47 million new followers online over the 2018/19 season – approximately double the previous year.
This growth was boosted primarily by the Warriors, the Houston Rockets and the Los Angeles Lakers, with the top five was completed by the Toronto Raptors and the Boston Celtics.
Despite limited playing time, Jeremy Lin, the first Asian-American player to win an NBA Championship ring, was the most popular player last season, with a combined 12.5 million followers on Weibo and Douyin. He also boasts the highest average engagement.
Lin recently signed with the Beijing Ducks of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).
Following Lin in the top five are Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson (both Golden State Warriors), Russell Westbrook (Houston Rockets) and Chris Paul (Oklahoma City Thunder).
According to Mailman, the acquisition of the Brooklyn Nets and the Barclays Center by Alibaba co-founder Joseph Tsai for US$3.5 billion earlier this month means it expects to see more Chinese sponsors and investors enter the NBA, with sponsorship opportunities in the market set to rise quickly.
Jeremy Lin is the most popular active player on Chinese social media, ahead of Stephen Curry.
