National Basketball Association (NBA) star Giannis Antetokounmpo has invested in Los Angeles Golf Club (LAGC), one of several founding franchises competing in TGL, the new team golf league spearheaded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TMRW Sports.

Confirmed:

  • Milwaukee Bucks forward joins Serena Williams, her husband Alexis Ohanian and Venus Williams as owner of LA-based franchise
  • Antetokounmpo’s three brothers – Thanasis, Kostas and Alex – have also invested as TGL gears up for inaugural season

Context:

Co-ownership of LAGC represents Antetokounmpo’s third investment in a sports team after the Greek star previously secured stakes in Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Milwaukee Brewers and Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Nashville SC.

Comment:

Antetokounmpo said on social media: “We want to make golf our own and for everybody. We couldn’t be more excited to shape the future of this sport.”

Coming next:

The six-team TGL, which is due to begin its first season in January 2024, will take place at a high-tech golf facility in Florida. As well as LA, franchises have already been confirmed in Boston and Atlanta, owned by Fenway Sports Group (FSG) and billionaire Arthur Blank respectively. A broadcast partner for the league has yet to be announced.
