France’s opening 2023 Rugby World Cup victory over New Zealand was watched by an average TV audience of 15.4 million viewers on commercial broadcaster TF1.
Confirmed:
- A peak audience of 17 million viewers was recorded during the match, which gained an audience share of 65 per cent
- The game drew a sold out crowd of 78,690 at the Stade de France
- The Rugby World Cup’s opening ceremony gained an average TV viewership of 9.5 million
Context:
The average audience for the tournament opener was an increase on the 14 million viewers that watched France’s opening game of the 2007 Rugby World Cup, which was the last time the country hosted the event.
