Cameras will be introduced to corner flags for the first time during Atlanta United’s Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup clash with Portland Timbers on Saturday evening.
Pay-TV broadcaster Fox Sports will add the new angles to a network of 26 cameras at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which is also home to the National Football League’s (NFL) Atlanta Falcons.
It is hoped the new camera positions will expand Fox’s sports coverage, and will likely give another vantage point to bring viewers closer to the action and brand sponsors.
In addition to the new ‘flag cams’, Fox Sports is also deploying 16 manned cameras, 10 unmanned, two shared cameras and a further two cameras for slow-motion footage.
“There are probably a finite amount of camera positions left in terms of soccer coverage,” said Michael Davies, Fox Sports senior vice president of field and technical operations.
“We have seen the value of pylon cameras in American football from time to time, so we decided to try the corner flags. We’ll look for opportunities to use this new view to enhance our storytelling.”
