Qatar has been named host of the 2027 Fiba Basketball World Cup, while the women’s tournament heads to Germany in 2026.
- All games to played in the city of Doha
- First time Qatar will host tournament
- Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 will be staged at Arena Berlin and Max-Schmeling Halle, which is also in the German capital
In making their decision on Qatar’s bid, the International Basketball Federation (Fiba) said it was impressed by ‘the elements around the compact geographical nature, unique flexibility with tournament venue scheduling to better serve the fans, as well as an emphasis on sustainability’.
For Qatar, landing another world cup is a boost for the nation’s ongoing ambitions to host premier sports events, having staged the 2022 Fifa World Cup last winter.
“The Central Board was impressed by the submission made by QBF [Qatar Basketball Federation],” said Hamane Niang, Fiba president.
”I would like to congratulate them on behalf of the board for the quality of the work they have already completed in putting this bid together. We are very happy to be able to award the Fiba Basketball World Cup 2027 to Qatar.”
Qatar can ramp up further preparations for Fiba’s flagship men’s competition, having already completed construction on all the venues for the tournament. The country also intends to use green technologies to make the Fiba Basketball World Cup a carbon-neutral event in 2027.
