Double Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso has signed a personal sponsorship deal with the insurance division of Spanish financial services provider Santander.

Alonso is expected to see another US$200,000 added on to his earnings from Santander as part of the extended agreement. The Spaniard, champion in 2005 and 2006, already has another deal in place with Santander’s banking division. The deals complement his Ferrari team’s major sponsorship deal with Santander, which came into effect as Alonso joined the team at the start of this year.

In a quirky twist, Alonso’s thumbs have been insured by Santander as part of a life and accident insurance package worth some €10 million. Santander called Alonso’s thumbs, “a big symbol as, apart from being essential when driving a Formula One car, they represent a sign of victory.”

Alonso currently sits third in this year’s world championship, with the next round of the Formula One world championship taking place in his home country on Sunday 9th May.
