- Six Dallas players had previously tested positive for coronavirus in Orlando
- Franchise working with MLS and state authorities to return home
- Nashville SC confirm five players have Covid-19
FC Dallas will not play in the Major League Soccer (MLS) is Back Tournament after ten players and one coach tested positive for coronavirus after touching down in Orlando last week.
The franchise had arrived at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex on 27th June ahead of the tournament’s proposed start date on 8th July, but will now take no part in the event after confirming the test results. The team have been in quarantine since then, preventing players from training.
Dallas previously announced that six players had contracted Covid-19, having had three positive tests before arriving in Orlando. It is not clear if the players who initially caught the virus travelled with the team.
Dallas were scheduled to play the Vancouver Whitecaps, Seattle Sounders and San Jose Earthquakes in Group B of the MLS is Back Tournament. The three matches are scheduled to be made up at a later date.
The franchise added that they are currently working with MLS, as well as officials in Florida and Texas, to construct a plan to bring the Dallas travelling delegation back to Texas.
“It’s a difficult day here at FC Dallas, we worked incredibly hard to get ready for this return to play tournament in Orlando,” said FC Dallas president Dan Hunt.
“I’m disappointed but at the same time proud of our guys for stepping up and wanting to play in this tournament; as well as the amount of effort [head coach] Luchi [Gonzalez] and his staff have put into this. Our players have worked so incredibly hard and I know are disappointed they’re not playing in the tournament.”
The news casts further doubt on whether the MLS is Back Tournament will get underway this week. As well as Dallas, Nashville SC had reportedly seen five of their players test positive for Covid-19 since arriving in Orlando on 3rd July. Vancouver Whitecaps and Colorado Rapids have also delayed their journeys to the city over concerning test results.
Staying in MLS, the New York Red Bulls have expanded their deal with diesel engine manufacturer Yanmar, which will now serve as the club’s official sleeve-patch partner for the duration of the MLS is Back Tournament.
The Japanese company has been the New York Red Bulls’ official agricultural machinery partner, marine partner and diesel engine partner since 2015. In addition, the company was the first partner to have permanent branding inside of the team’s Red Bull Arena and has also featured on the sleeve of the club’s training gear since 2015.
A further sleeve sponsorship was also announced by the LA Galaxy, confirming the designation to Herblife Nutrition and Dignity Health for the MLS is Back Tournament. The two parties had been working together as part of the ‘Together at Home’ community campaign to support the Los Angeles areas since the Covid-19 outbreak.
