The Women’s Super League (WSL) has agreed a deal with Barclays to become the first ever title sponsor of the English women’s soccer top-flight.
The three-year partnership between the Football Association (FA), English soccer’s governing body, and Barclays is reported to be worth UK£10 million and will start from the 2019/2020 season.
The WSL, Europe’s only professional, full-time women’s soccer league, will also be rebranded to become the Barclays FA Women’s Super League, with the financial institution contributing a total prize-money pot of GB£500,000, awarded based on finishing position.
The partnership will also see Barclays and the FA work on initiatives to promote growth and participation in grassroots women’s soccer, taking on the lead partner status of the FA Girls’ Football School Partnerships, a nationwide project that develops girls’ access to soccer in schools.
Kelly Simmons, the director of women’s professional game at the FA said: “[Barclays] record, multimillion-pound commitment will impact all levels of the game and will support our ambition to make the Barclays FA Women’s Super League the world’s most successful league, on and off the pitch.”
Barclays chief executive officer, Jes Staley, added: “Our commitment to women’s and girls’ football, at a crucial time in its development, goes beyond pure sponsorship – we believe it can be a key to increasing participation, development and the wider visibility of the female game.”
