Golf’s European Tour has teamed up with Swedish esports production company Dreamhack to launch its first ever esports competition.
Named the European eTour Championship, the tournament will launch at the Made in Denmark tour event, which takes place at the Himmerland Resort in Farsø from 23rd to 26th May.
Eight of the best esports players from around the world will head to Denmark to play online golf title World Golf Tour, which has more than 15 million players globally, going head-to-head in knockout match play format. Players will be competing for a prize fund of US$5,000, the biggest prize pool in an esports golf tournament.
European eTour Championship will consist of four quarterfinals on 23rd May, followed by two semi-finals and the grand final on 24th May.
Richard Bunn, European Tour head of media rights and programming, said: “[Esports] is undoubtedly an area which has huge potential where we will be able to engage with audiences beyond our traditional following, whilst also creating new sponsorship opportunities for our commercial partners.”
