The value of the European sports sponsorship reach a record €20.07 billion (US$22.6 billion) in 2018, according to a report produced by the European Sponsorship Association (ESA) for its members.
With the market mostly driven by major countries and global events, including the Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang and the Fifa World Cup in Russia, the ESA reports says the sports sector grew 8.7 per cent last year.
It is the third successive year the value sports sponsorship has risen in the annual ESA report, recording returns of €18.17 billion (US$20.46 billion) and €18.46 billion (US$20.78 billion) in 2016 and 2017 respectively.
The record amount combines the value of deals exclusive to individual European markets and deals for pan-European events, plus the European share of deals for global events.
Including the non-sport sector, in total the sponsorship industry grew to €30.1 billion (US$33.89 billion), according to the ESA.
The report shows that increases were most prominent in Germany (up 7.3 per cent to €6.02 billion (US$6.78 billion)) and the UK (up 9.1 per cent to €4.3 billion (US$4.84 billion)) with smaller markets only seeing incremental growth.
With largescale sports competitions dominating 2018, the sponsorship value of pan-European events and the share of global events rose by 66.4 per cent to €2.43 billion (US$2.73 billion). In contrast, the total value of deals in European only markets rose by 5.4 per cent to €27.67 billion (US$31.17 billion).
The figures were compiled on behalf of the ESA by Nielsen Sports Market Intelligence.
