ESPN Brasil has secured the Brazilian broadcast rights to the Uefa Europa League for the next three years.

The competition, like the Uefa Champions League which the broadcaster also shows, is massively popular in Brazil because of the number of South American players taking part. A Uefa spokesperson said: "In recent seasons the best of European club football has featured many star players from Central and Latin America and this has fuelled local interest in both competitions."

The deal represents a boost to ESPN, which lost the rights to the Champions League throughout Spanish-speaking South America to Fox earlier this year.

The broadcaster shows a wide range of European soccer in Brazil, including the English Premier League, Spain's La Liga, Germany's Bundesliga and Italy's Serie A. It has more than two million subscribers.
