- OTT platform to offer individual games and seasonal packages
- StreamAMG adds to rugby union deals having also partnered Pro14
European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR), the organiser of rugby union’s Heineken Champions Cup and European Rugby Challenge Cup, has announced the launch of a global over-the-top (OTT) streaming service, epcrugby.tv.
Powered by OTT solutions provider StreamAMG, the direct-to-consumer platform will show live coverage of matches from both competitions in territories where broadcast rights have not been sold.
Matches can be purchased individually at a price of €2.99 for the elite Heineken Champions Cup and €1.99 for the Challenge Cup, or as a package for the remainder of the current season, which concludes next month.
Lausanne-based EPCR currently has broadcast rights contracts in a number of key rugby territories, having signed deals with French networks France Télévision and BeIN Sports, Ireland’s Virgin Media, the UK’s BT Sport and Channel 4, SuperSport in sub-Saharan Africa, and US broadcaster NBC Sports.
The body also has a four-year deal with streaming service DAZN that covers exclusive rights in Canada, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Japan.
“We are celebrating the outstanding history of the tournaments this season on official digital channels and this OTT platform is another sign of our digital evolution,” said EPCR chief executive Vincent Gaillard.
“Broadcast platforms for EPCR tournaments have been enriched and optimised by a strong balance of linear and OTT platforms in different territories and epcrugby.tv now gives fans the chance to see the games in markets where they previously didn’t have that chance.”
EPCR was one of several governing bodies in rugby union that met last year to discuss the creation of owned and operated OTT services. Following that meeting, the Pro14 provincial club competition became the first rugby union league to launch an international OTT platform after partnering with StreamAMG.
“We are thrilled to be supporting EPCR’s OTT strategy,” added Hugo Sharman, StreamAMG’s chief executive. “Epcrugby.tv will bring top class action to rugby’s growing global audience and it’s a privilege to be a part of that.”
The final rounds of the 2019-20 Heineken and Challenge Cups were postponed until September and October due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with the quarter-finals taking place last weekend.
