Eleven expanding women’s sports, esports and digital efforts as part of rebrand

Multi-territory media company seeks to add more ‘premium’ rights in coming months.

Global broadcaster Eleven Sports has announced plans to expand its digital content, including the launch of three new verticals dedicated to women’s sport, lower-league competitions, and esports.

As part of a company rebrand, Eleven also confirmed plans to roll out a new digital content hub later this year and add more premium sports rights ‘in the months ahead’.

Now operating under a new ‘Eleven’ umbrella, the company’s revised strategy will take an initial focus on its operations in Belgium, Portugal, and Italy, before expanding to its other markets in Luxembourg, Poland, Taiwan, Japan, and Myanmar.

In Belgium, where Eleven recently acquired rights to domestic soccer’s top-flight Pro League for the next five years, the renewed commitment to women’s sport can be seen in the decision to air live matches from the Belgian Women's First Division. A dedicated new Eleven Women division has also been formed with the task of expanding its wider programme of women’s sports rights globally.

Other new areas of the business include Eleven Next, which will be in position to build on the company’s ‘longtail strategy’ in Italy, where Eleven already live streams action from the country’s Serie C and Serie D soccer competitions.

In addition, the company’s rebrand also includes the launch of Eleven Esports, which will see more competitive gaming become part of the media company’s offering, having streamed more than 200 live esports events across its platforms during sport’s coronavirus shutdown.

Eleven’s chief executive Luis Vicente said that the new ‘Eleven 2.0 strategy’ will incorporate an “innovative, digital-first and data-led approach” and a push for more virtual content.

“We are convinced about the massive untapped potential in the new brand verticals we’ve announced and we are excited about the opportunities we can deliver for more sports, athletes and fans around the world, in a true spirit of co-creation and joint venture,” Vicente said.

“More than ever, we are building the most varied, most dynamic content offering possible and a destination to serve all fans with the content they want, at the time they want and wherever they are. More than ever, we stand by the fans and for the fans”

Eleven Sports was founded in 2015 by owner Andrea Radrizzani, who also owns recently promoted Premier League outfit Leeds United, and is chaired by Marc Watson.
