Deportivo La Coruna, the Spanish soccer team, has signed beer brand Estrella Galicia, in a new one-and-a-half season cut-price shirt sponsorship deal. The deal will run for the remainder of the current season, as well as the 2009/2010 season.

Officials at the club are said to be relieved, having started the 2008/2009 season as one of only two clubs in the Spanish top tier – the other being Majorca – that did not have a shirt sponsor. Their previous shirt sponsorship deal with Fadesa-Martinsa, a Spanish building company, fell through after it collapsed during the real estate crisis. Estrella Galicia will be pleased to have secured shirt sponsorship relatively cheaply at a top club in one of Europe’s richest and most famous leagues.

The length of the deal, however, is regarded as a shrewd signing by Deportivo, with the team showing improving performances and targeting a top-four finish in the league. This would see them compete in the Champions League, Europe’s premier club tournament, where sponsorship deals increase in value dramatically.

Estrella Galicia is already a one per cent shareholder in Deportivo, currently seventh in the Primera Liga.
