DAZN snaps up KSI-Logan Paul rematch

Matchroom Boxing to promote YouTube stars’ boxing match globally.

Multi-territory over-the-top (OTT) media company DAZN has snapped up the global rights to the boxing rematch between YouTube stars KSI and Logan Paul.

The fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles takes places 9th November and is being promoted by DAZN’s strategic partner Matchroom Boxing USA in association with OP Talent.

DAZN will stream live coverage of the fight in the US, Canada, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Japan and Brazil.

Matchroom managing director Eddie Hearn requested that both fighters turn professional for the rematch and undergo the required medicals that any other boxer would.

The YouTube rivals clashed in August 2018 at the sold-out Manchester Arena in Manchester, England, with the fight watched by more than one million live pay-per-view buyers on YouTube, ending in a majority draw.

Liam Chivers, KSI’s manager, revealed that the deal will cover global rights, distribution, promotion and appearance commitments for the fight.

Adding: “A no-risk, high-budget, secure platform deal had to be achieved. I wasn’t going to risk broadcast on an unstable or unsupportive platform and have cost and piracy risk put on KSI.”

Hearn was unsure over the viability of the original fight but after seeing its success was convinced of the business case.

“13 months ago when the first fight took place I smirked and pondered how embarrassing it would be to stage this event in a 20,000-seater arena,” he said. “What I saw was a phenomenon; a sold-out arena, over one million PPV buys but more importantly an energy of a new audience to the sport of boxing.”

For DAZN , the fight presents an opportunity to reach a potentially huge young audience in multiple markets as it bids to grow subscriptions. Logan Paul and KIS have more than 40 million YouTube subscribers between them.

“DAZN is excited to team up with KSI, Logan Paul and Matchroom Boxing on such a unique event,” said Joseph Markowski, DAZN executive vice president, North America. “Both men have enormous fanbases and we look forward to bringing best-in-class production and programming to this new group of potential DAZN subscribers around the world.”
