Over-the-top (OTT) media group DAZN has partnered with Uninterrupted, the production company founded by National Basketball Association (NBA) star LeBron James, initially to produce and air a new boxing-focused documentary series.
The first edition of 40 Days will centre on Mexican boxer and DAZN contractor, Canelo Alvarez. The series will follow Alvarez and American boxer Daniel Jacobs, during their preparation for their highly-anticipated middleweight title fight at Madison Square Gardens on 4th May.
40 Days forms part an ongoing global media partnership between DAZN and Uninterrupted that is designed to produce a slate of content in the boxing space, elevating the stories from some of the sport’s biggest names.
Part one of the series will be available on 23rd April via the DAZN platform and social media channels, followed by a second instalment on 30th April.
Maverick Carter, Uninterrupted’s chief executive, said: “We’re partnering with DAZN to reach a whole new audience of global boxing fans that want to see another side to these athletes that has yet to be shown.
“These documentaries will shine a light on the three-dimensional aspect of who these athletes are outside of the ring and empower them to tell their own stories as they prepare for some of the biggest moments in their boxing careers.”
Alverez made history last October when he signed an exclusive US$365 million with DAZN, as part of a five-year agreement that represents the richest athlete contract ever.
Alvarez’s fights had long been shown on HBO as part of an agreement with the US boxing promoter Golden Boy Promotions, but turned to DAZN after the US broadcaster announced last year it was bowing out of boxing after 45 years showcasing the sport.
DAZN’s executive chairman John Skipper “We’re thrilled to work with LeBron and Maverick on this partnership. They have a unique vantage point that allows them to understand both Canelo’s pursuit to be one of the greatest of all time and Jacobs’ dogged determination to reach the pinnacle of his sport.”
Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and chief executive of Golden Boy, added: “These are exciting times for the sport of boxing, and this partnership between Uninterrupted and DAZN is yet another example of that.”
