German pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland has reacquired rights for the Uefa Champions League in a new agreement which will see coverage sub-licensed to streaming platform DAZN.

The three-year deal will cover European soccer’s premier competition from 2018/19 to 2020/21, and will provide Sky with rights in Germany and Austria to the tournament on satellite, cable, IPTV, web and mobile platforms.

Although financial terms of the sublicensing agreement with DAZN were not disclosed, last month the Bloomberg news agency reported that DAZN's smaller rights deal could be worth about €600 million (US$673 million). Official details are expected to be announced by the two parties ahead of the 2018/19 season.

“We are extremely proud to be bringing the Uefa Champions League to DAZN from the start of the 2018/2019 season,” said James Rushton, chief executive of DAZN. “This right perfectly complements our comprehensive live-coverage of all the European football leagues.”

The deal represents the first time that some Uefa Champions League games will be shown only via internet-enabled devices, although it is not yet known which fixtures will be carried by DAZN.

Spanish giants Real Madrid won the Champions League title in 2016/17, beating Italian side Juventus 4-1 in the final in Cardiff, Wales.
