Second-tier Spanish club Alcorcón have announced the conclusion of their sale to Best Navy SL, which now becomes the club’s majority shareholder after the deal was ratified by the National Sports Council (CSD).
The takeover, which is reportedly worth between €12 million (US$13.5 million) and €14 million (US$15.8 million), was led by David Blitzer and marks his latest major investment in a sports team.
The takeover group also consists of Ivan Bravo, director general of Aspire Academy – which develops male Qatari athletes – and former director of strategy at Spanish soccer giants Real Madrid. The deal sees the departure of previous owner Roland Duchatelet, who also owns recently promoted English second-tier club Charlton.
Along with fellow American Joshua Harris, their Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE) company has controlling stakes in Premier League club Crystal Palace, the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Philadelphia 76ers and the National Hockey League’s (NHL) New Jersey Devils.
The new owners have already outlined their goals for the club, with plans to consolidate and grow AD Alcorcón on and off the pitch, as well as to strengthen the club as an integral part of the sporting, economic and social landscape in the Madrid suburb.
David Blitzer said: “We are excited about our arrival in Spanish football, and with the opportunity to contribute our experience in the world of professional sports so that AD Alcorcón can continue growing as an institution with increasingly ambitious goals.
“We want all citizens of Alcorcón to identify with the club and be participants in its development.”
Blitzer’s purchase of AD Alcorcón was independent of HBSE and comes amid ongoing speculation that the group is looking to sell its stake in Crystal Palace only three years after investing.
AD Alcorcón ended the 2018/19 season with a 14th place finish in the Segunda División, a massive 27 points of promotion to the Spanish top-flight.
The US businessman has added to his ownership portfolio which includes Premier League, NBA and NHL clubs.
