31 March 2017 Adam Nelson

Australian rules football side Adelaide FC have secured a major sponsorship deal with China Southern Airlines.

The Crows are believed to have beaten their cross-town Australian Football League (AFL) rivals Port Adelaide to the signing of the carrier, as Chinese firms look to step up their involvement in Austraian sport. Port Adelaide are themselves set to play in the AFL's first ever match in China when they face Gold Coast Suns in Shanghai on 14th May.

China Southern Airlines, the fourth largest airline in the world by passenger volume, will be positioned just below carmaker Toyota as a premium partner on the Crows' sponsorship roster. According to local newspaper the Adelaide Advertiser, the deal is worth a high seven-figure sum over two years.

Elsewhere in the AFL, fuel supplier United Petroleum has jumped ship from the aforementioned Gold Coast Suns to Richmond.

The company, which operates a number of petrol stations across Australia, becomes the official coaches' partner of Richmond, and its branding will appear on matchday balls during home games at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
