Copa Libertadores drinks to Amstel deal

Beer brand is the first sponsor brought in by Conmebol’s collaboration with IMG.

7 March 2017 George Dudley

Dutch brewery Amstel has agreed a four-year sponsorship of Conmebol’s Copa Libertadores, South America's premier club soccer tournament

As a result, the Heineken-owned brand will have a strong brand presence at the competition’s matches through pitch side LED boards, while Conmebol will allow the Copa Libertadores logo to be used by Amstel in regional advertising campaigns.

The sponsorship is the first since global sports agency IMG became the exclusive marketing partner of the Copa Libertadores. The financial terms of the deal, which runs until 2021, have not been released.

“We are pleased to sign this sponsorship with an important brand such as Amstel,” said Marcos Senna, commercial director at Conmebol. “For sure, this agreement will be highly beneficial for both parties, our South American cup, and football fans.”

The tournament’s long-standing title sponsor Bridgestone is in the final year of a five-year agreement initially signed in 2012. The Libertadores also has commercial partnerships with Spanish bank Santander and global sportswear manufacturer Nike in place.

The 2016 Copa Libertadores was won by Columbia's Atlético Nacional, who beat Ecuadorian outfit Independiente del Valle 2-1 in the two-legged final.
