The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), the sport’s elite national league, has agreed a five-year digital broadcast rights deal with China Mobile’s Migu streaming platform for a reported CNY2 billion (US$282 million).

The contract begins with the 2020/21 season and sees Migu become a strategic partner with exclusivity in the 5G category. The deal gives the over-the-top (OTT) platform exclusive IPTV media rights covering all league matches, as well as the CBA All-Star weekend.

If correct, the value of the contract, which was reported by Lanxiong Sports, would mark a new commercial record for the CBA and also the longest contract signed since it took over the league’s business development in 2017.

According to the official press release, China Mobile will establish a 5G joint laboratory with the CBA to explore more live broadcast technology based on 5G transmission.

In addition, the main contents of the cooperation include joint member development, authorised merchandise sales, offline competition operations, and Migu Coffee sponsorship rights.
