The Denver Post has reported that retailer Sports Authority is close to securing a 25-year naming rights deal for the Denver Broncos’ home stadium.

The deal, worth a reported US$150million, would see the stadium renamed the Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Jeff Schumacher, Sports Authority’s chief marketing officer, told the newspaper: "We look at it as having a hometown sponsor for a hometown stadium and a hometown team. It's about creating an emotional connection with our customers."

The Denver Broncos are one of the NFL’s most successful teams. They have won two Super Bowls and six AFC Championships but last season saw the team set a club record for losses after posting a disappointing 4-12 record.

Sports Authority is one of America’s largest sports retailers with 470 outlets nationwide. They have a strong presence in Colorado with 31 stores across the state.

The deal is expected to be completed within the next few days.
