Spanish soccer champions Barcelona have teamed up with Roblox, an online platform which allows users to create their own games, to showcase their new home kit for the 2019/20 season.

Members of the platform will be able to play in various games as one of two avatars kitted out in the La Liga side’s new home shirt, which for the first time in the club’s history features a checkerboard print instead of their traditional red and blue stripes.

An official release said that Roblox has 90 million users worldwide, most of which fall into the ‘Generation Z’ category of children and teenagers.

Dídac Lee, head of Barcelona’s digital department, said that the move will help the club connect with “millions of children and teenagers around the world” through a “unique gaming experience.”

He added: “In the FC Barcelona Digital Area, we firmly believe that the best way to connect and generate engagement with our audience is by creating new communication channels to enable interaction across the digital realm, entertainment and sport. This is the first of many initiatives that we will be presenting shortly.”

Craig Donato, chief business officer at Roblox, said: “Roblox and FC Barcelona both deeply believe in the power of play to foster creativity and bring together a diverse and talented community.

“We’re thrilled our global community of millions of players can show their support for FC Barcelona by customising their avatars with these awesome new Barça 2019 kits.”

The tie-up comes in the same month that Barcelona extended their global partnership with videogame developer Konami, with the new agreement including an enhanced focus on esports.
