Ricky Ponting has received 500 shares in Altrincham FC in thanks for his contribution to fundraising at the club.

The non-league side’s chairman, Geoff Goodwin, gave the shares to Ponting in advance of Tuesday’s friendly against Manchester United at the club’s 6,000-capacity Moss Lane, attended by the Australia captain.

“Ricky has become a very good friend and I’ll be proud he’s there,” Goodwin said in advance of the friendly.

Ponting, the Australia captain, finds his team 1-0 down in the Ashes series against England, with two test matches remaining.
