German soccer player Mesut Ozil has announced the launch of his own esports team focusing on the EA Sports FIFA series.
Ozil, who retired from representing Germany in international soccer after the recent World Cup, is partnering with esports agency eSportsReputation in order to create his team.
The plan of ‘Team Ozil’ is to take part in both national and international Fifa esports tournaments. He confirmed the deal, writing on Twitter: “How cheeky is that: I'm teaming up with @eSports_Rep to form my own @EASPORTSFIFA team.
“In the upcoming weeks we'll look out for players around the world who will represent #teamozil in all major national and international EA FIFA competitions.”
Ozil’s move towards owning an esports team comes after he was announced as a brand ambassador for the Fifa eWorld Cup in June. The tournament, which is ongoing, finishes with its grand final on Saturday. The winner of the competition will win US$250,000.
